NCAA Football 12 Release, EA Sports

NCAA Football 12,  EA Sports
Gadget Mobile Technology: NCAA Football 12 Release, EA Sports - Jay Duncan gripped a video game controller as his eyes locked on a television screen where he guided Alabama against Stanford.

The stunning graphics of NCAA Football 12, a college football video game produced by EA Sports, were hypnotic and a challenge to ignore in a town so addicted to football and starving for some pigskin.

What makes this year's edition of the game a little more special locally is the image of 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram on the cover.

Now preparing for the NFL after he was a first-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints, Ingram won a voting competition to become the cover boy.

Images of Ingram's cover were visible throughout the store.

And tonight, GameStop was preparing for a midnight release of the game, which retails for $59.99, with a party around Midtown Village.

"It's definitely a more heightened focus on NCAA around the area," GameStop salesman Carl Rammel said. "Everybody gets that Crimson Tide fever, that drive to want to support their team and their team being No. 1. There's a lot of pride in this city with what we've been through more recently."

Duncan, 30, spent some time Monday at this GameStop location not just testing driving the new game, but actually practicing for a five-player tournament that will kickoff sometime after midnight when he gets his copy of the game. The winner of that tournament takes home a belt, a cheap replica of those a championship wrestler or boxer might wear.

There was a lot of buzz in this store where they not only host a midnight release of the game, but an annual celebration with enough food and games to invite a whole city to join in the fun.

"What we basically want to do tonight is not just have a party celebrating NCAA, but celebrating everything," Rammel said. "After everything we've been through and are still going through, we're gonna pull this together and have a huge party. We can all agree on one thing, and that's college football."

GameStop, which offers an additional 25 percent discount for trade-ins specifically for this game, is hosting a tournament leading up to the midnight launch.

People can signup throughout the night to play advance copies of the game on video screens that will be setup inside Midtown Village.

The party has attracted vendors such as Pepsi, Panera Bread, Hooters, McAlister's Deli and Aarons to all donate goods and services to the event, which is expected to draw a few hundred people.

Duncan attended last year's event and is prepared for this one.

"Last year, the line wrapped around the building," Duncan said of those waiting to obtain their copy of the game. "Today is going to be kind of interesting. It's supposed to rain tonight. I'll still be here with my raincoat and my umbrella."
